It’s simply the most honest way Michael Constantine Kritikos knows how to explain his relationship with creating.

They celebrated milestones, encouraged his ambitions, and lived long enough to see him earn his college degree. Looking back, Kritikos doesn’t describe those experiences as the beginning of a music career. He describes them as the beginning of a foundation.

Through personal struggles, recovery, financial uncertainty, and the constant pressure of trying to build a future, music remained the one place where Michael K felt completely honest with himself. It wasn’t about escaping reality—it was about understanding it.

Rather than creating songs to impress people, he created them because they helped him process whatever chapter he happened to be living through. That perspective still defines his work today. Whether recording a melodic late-night record or a more introspective performance, Kritikos approaches each session with the same goal: leave something real inside the music. It started in fourth grade, just a kid trying to be cool.

That’s how 8BitJ, the San Francisco-born, East Bay-raised rapper, describes his earliest days with music. Not a lightning bolt moment, not some divine creative calling. Just a boy who wanted to fit in and found something that fit him perfectly instead.

By the time he was a high school freshman in 2011, something had shifted. He bought his first microphone. He saw others rapping and wanted in, not just to participate, but to mean something. “I wanted to be a part of that,” he recalls. What followed was over a decade of trial, error, and relentless self-refinement.

Today, 8BitJ occupies a rare space in hip-hop: experimental enough to challenge you, soulful enough to keep you, and honest enough to make you feel genuinely seen. He describes his sound as “expressive, no filter, raw lyrical, and soulful” but is quick to add that those words barely scratch the surface. “There’s so much more beneath the surface,” he says, “which I think is the case for any great artist.”

His influences read like a hall of fame. 2Pac, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller. But what he’s taken from each goes beyond surface-level inspiration. From 2Pac, honesty and depth. From Kanye, the permission to push boundaries without apology. From Jay-Z, an undeniable aura. From Kendrick, lyricism and versatility. And from Mac Miller, something harder to name, a kind of genuine humanity that bleeds through every song.

That humanity is at the core of his fourth album Piranha, which dropped July 4, 2026. Where previous projects turned inward on personal decisions and private life, Piranha expands its lens. “It’s a bigger in-depth look at the environments around me and things I can’t control,” he explains. “There’s a level of growth and maturity and understanding about myself that I don’t think I’ve ever had on any other project.”

He describes the album as a spiritual successor to Dreamland, his debut, an album he holds close. Making Piranha began a year ago during a period of heavy self-reflection. Production comes from Kronos The Chef, Bailey Daniel, Stoic Beats, and others, a collaborative sonic world that matches the weight of the writing.

When he talks about his creative process, there’s a beautiful simplicity to it. He listens to over a hundred beats a day when working on new music. He pulls out a notepad. If he feels something, he keeps writing. If he doesn’t, he scraps it. “It’s not that crazy of a method,” he says with characteristic modesty.

What isn’t simple is what he’s building toward. “I see my music becoming massive in the next few years,” he says. “I’ve worked very hard, and with every album I feel I’ve taken a step up.” There’s no arrogance in that statement, only the quiet certainty of someone who has put in the work and knows what it means.

For 8BitJ, music isn’t a career move. It’s a journal. A vent. A way of making sense of what dominates his mind. “Every time I make a new album,” he says, “it’s another way for me to create another journal… being able to express these feelings is therapeutic.”

The challenge, as always, is turning that therapy into a great song. With Piranha, he’s done exactly that.

Continuing the momentum, Wadena officially releases two highly anticipated summer records, “Drop Dem Booties (Club Remix)“ and “Girl Play (Remix),“ on New Music Friday, July 3, 2026, just in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Designed to become the soundtrack of the summer, “Drop Dem Booties (Club Remix)“ delivers an infectious “jump on it,” bounce-and-drop-low energy perfect for clubs, pool parties, beach parties, cookouts, festivals, and holiday celebrations. “Girl Play (Remix)” brings a completely different vibe, blending smooth melodies with feel-good rhythms that invite listeners to relax, dance, and enjoy the moment.

Together with “Smoke-N-Chill” and “Bum Busta,” Wadena is delivering four standout records that showcase her versatility across Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, Trap, Melodic Rap, and Club Music.

Wadena’s remarkable comeback makes the new releases even more meaningful. After suffering a traumatic brain injury, she faced the difficult challenge of relearning how to talk, walk, sing, and perform. Refusing to let those obstacles define her future, Wadena returned to the recording studio with renewed determination.

Her first recording sessions after recovering took place in Atlanta, Georgia, with Grammy Award-winning producer and hip-hop legend Zaytoven and his team. Unknown to Zaytoven, it was Wadena’s first time back in a professional recording studio after recovering portions of her long-term and short-term memory.

For Wadena, the sessions became proof that her creativity had returned. After hearing Zaytoven’s production, she re-worked “Smoke-N-Chill” before recording both the lead and background vocals. The following day, she recorded “Bum Busta.”

“I walked into the studio not knowing what to expect after everything I’d been through,” says Wadena. “To re-work ‘Smoke-N-Chill,’ record my lead and background vocals, and then come back the next day to record ‘Bum Busta’ reminded me that I still had it. That moment meant everything to me.”

According to Wadena, before and after traveling from New York to Atlanta to write and  record  with Zaytoven, she experienced events that she says invaded her privacy and interfered with her music career. Wadena alleges that members of Suffolk County, New York law enforcement and narcotics units subjected her, her disabled and elderly mother, her sister, and their residence to warrantless searches while scrutinizing the lyrics to “Smoke-N-Chill.”

Wadena says she was questioned about whether she was traveling between Long Island, New York, and Atlanta, Georgia, to traffic drugs because of the song’s lyrics. She strongly disputes those suspicions.

“My music is protected artistic expression,” Wadena says. ” I am serting the record straight.

PoloSongs tell stories, create moods, and allow artists to express themselves creatively. ‘Smoke-N-Chill’ was never intended to promote illegal drug use. I don’t use drugs, and neither does Zaytoven. Marijuana is legal in New York. Artists should be free to create without being judged by song titles or lyrics.”

Despite those experiences, Wadena refused to let anything stop her return to music.

Now, with “Drop Dem Booties (Club Remix),” “Girl Play (Remix),” “Smoke-N-Chill,” and “Bum Busta” building momentum, Wadena is preparing for the release of her highly anticipated EP, “Wadena vs. Wadena: Back Outside,” arriving during her birthday weekend on August 31, 2026.
